Objet publié
October 2016 – On October 4, Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm, tore through the Caribbean causing widespread damage, flooding and displacement in Haiti. Hurricane Matthew has resulted in the largest humanitarian crisis in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. An estimated 1.2 million people have been affected. With GAC’s support, the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) is assisting hurricane-affected people to resume their economic activities and restore their livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) supporting the early recovery of the agricultural sector in the heavily affected Grande Anse and Sud regions; (2) providing small scale cash grants to displaced women who lost their livelihoods as a result of the hurricane; (3) providing seeds and tool kits to 3,000 farmers whose crops and farming materials were lost in the hurricane and resulting flooding; and (4) addressing shelter rehabilitation needs, working with local contractors to support vulnerable individuals and families to repair their homes by providing durable shelter materials such as corrugated metal roofs.
