On 7 March 2017, Cyclone Enawo made landfall in north-eastern Madagascar and proceeded to travel the length of the country, bringing high winds, rain, and flooding before exiting the south of the island on 10 March. Overall, an estimated 434,000 people have been severely affected by the storm, with more than 40,000 houses destroyed, 3,900 classrooms damaged, and more than 1,300 water points polluted. With GAC support, UNICEF is helping to (1) restore access to safe water for 83,000 people; (2) restore WASH access at 64 schools and 29 health centres; (3) provide essential medicines and supplies to health centres; (4) provide essential vaccinations to 75,000 vulnerable children; (5) distribute anti-malarial bednets to 55,000 pregnant women and young children; (6) establish 1,000 temporary learning spaces for 45,000 children; and, (7) provide support and referral systems for children at risk of violence or exploitation.
