2011-01-25; Starting late December 2010, Sri Lanka experienced torrential rains causing severe flooding and landslides in the Eastern and Central regions of the country leading to 43 deaths and affecting 1,060,273 people. At the height of the disaster, around the 13 and 14 January, over 320,000 persons were displaced in temporary emergency shelters in the worst affected areas. The disaster further resulted in approximately 6,000 destroyed and 23,000 damaged homes. CIDA aims to support the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in providing food assistance and supplementary food distribution to people displaced or affected by the floods in Sri Lanka. Additionally, micro-nutrient rich commodities are provided through health facilities to address moderate malnutrition, while food-for-work initiatives are implemented to recover community livelihoods.
