October 21, 2011 - Since June 2011, South-East Asia has experienced heavier than usual Monsoon rains that have resulted in severe flooding in a number of countries. In Thailand, 58 of 77 provinces have experienced flooding, primarily in the North and Northeast regions of the country. Officials list the number of flood-related deaths at 307, with a total of 2.7 million people affected. Approximately 4 million acres of agricultural land has been adversely affected, in addition to 52,000 acres used for fisheries and 10 million head of livestock. CIDA’s contribution is supporting the Thai Red Cross Society through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFCR) to respond to the basic needs of flood-affected families in Thailand through the provision of family kits. These kits include food and such essential items as as utensils and tools, hygiene supplies, sanitation supplies, basic household medicine and clean water. The project is expected to reach 27,000 beneficiary families.
