March 2013 - The humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic is the result of more than a decade of internal conflict and criminal violence. An estimated 664,000 people in Central African Republic, including 41,679 internally displaced persons and returnees, are in need of humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. With Canada's support, Doctors without Borders (DWB) is addressing basic emergency healthcare needs in the Ouham Region of the Central African Republic. Activities focus on the provision of primary and secondary medical services, as well as strengthening emergency preparedness to improve the response capacity to outbreaks and medical emergencies. Activities include: the provision of treatment for diseases, including malaria and nutrition-related programming, in health districts serving up to 172,000 people; provision of high quality antenatal and postnatal consultations; treatment for serious medical issues in health centres and hospitals, including obstetrics and surgical emergencies; and, provision of treatment for cases of war surgery and sexual violence.
