January 2013 - The heavy rains and strong winds from Hurricane Sandy in late October 2012 battered Haiti for more than three days, extracting a heavy humanitarian toll on the country, with at least 1.6 million people affected. The departments in the south and western areas of the country were the most affected. Damage to homes, the agriculture sector and public buildings and public facilities, including potable water networks, hospitals and schools, was widespread. The food security situation also deteriorated with the passage of Hurricane Sandy. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is part of the largest humanitarian network in the world. The Federation is comprised of 187 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and can count on almost 97 million volunteers, supporters and staff worldwide. With Canada's support, the IFRC will provide humanitarian assistance, through the Haitian Red Cross, to 8,000 families (40,000 beneficiaries) affected by Hurricane Sandy. Project activities will focus on providing non-food relief items, emergency shelter solutions, livelihoods activities (with a focus on food security), safe water and sanitation and emergency healthcare (with a focus on cholera prevention) to the affected populations in the southern and west departments.
