In collaboration with the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada), UNA-South Africa and UNA-Zambia plan, design and manage health and social programs, using the Sport in a Box approach in which 200 youth coach leaders receive training. This approach also includes coaching and training for approximately 5,500 African youths from youth leaders and mentors, and the provision of sports materials that promote recreation for healthy and active living. Youth in Canada benefit from Canadian public engagement activities, encouraging awareness about the Millennium Development Goals and the work of Sport in a Box. UNA-Canada also aims to transfer knowledge to enhance the governance structures, management, programming and networking of partner UN Associations and other civil society organizations in South Africa, Zambia and Namibia. UN Association partners collaborate with sports community groups, principally Play Soccer, to facilitate access to recreational sports by disadvantaged youths, ensuring participation by girls in target communities, as well as to ensure equitable, gender-balanced approaches in their organizational practices. This is one of two components of a project valued at $397,616.
