This project aims to improve food security - or access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food - by supporting agriculture and promoting people’s adaptation to climate change. It seeks to help 40,000 vulnerable people living in Boucle du Mouhoun, including farmers’ groups, their families, with a particular focus on women and youth In Boucle du Mouhoun, climate change is causing soil to be depleted of nutrients, water to become scarce, and deforestation, all of which contribute to reducing farmers’ ability to produce enough food. This threatens the food security of people living in the region. To address this, the project seeks to: (i) produce and distribute improved crop seeds, sheep and goats to increase and diversify agricultural production; (ii) introduce new crops, such as cowpeas (a legume that grows well in poor soils), to improve family diets; (iii) promote and demonstrating better practices and techniques for breeding and raising small livestock; (iv) provide training so that people can use manure to produce biogas, a renewable fuel source; and (v) reforest using native species, including acacia, to help farmers adopt agro-environmental innovations that fight desertification. Union des producteurs agricoles - Développement international and Fondation Jules et Paul-Émile Léger are working in partnership with Union des groupements pour la commercialisation des produits agricoles de la Boucle du Mouhoun (Boucle du Mouhoun Union of groupings for the marketing of agricultural products) to implement this project. This project is one of ten projects that received funding from the Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience through Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.
