Published purpose
The City of Sarnia has a significant need to upgrade its sanitary and stormwater sewer system. An increase in the frequency and intensity of storms has resulted in basement flooding and sewer overflows, threatening properties and the environment, including the St. Clair River. The proposed project would replace combined sewers with separate dedicated storm and sanitary sewers and upgrade the conveyance and retention capacity of the wastewater collection system. This would reduce the risk of future surface and basement flooding and sewer backups as well as improve the quality of waterflows into the environment. The objectives of ‘Cromwell area Sewer Separation and Flood Mitigation Project’ are: 1. Mitigate the surface and basement flooding in the project area of the City during extreme rain storm events. Thereby, improving Resilience of our wastewater collection system to extreme storm events in the project area. 2. Mitigate the of Combined Sewer Over flows into the St. Clair, River thereby improving the water quality in the St. Clair River and protecting downstream users /communities. 3. Enhancing hydraulic conveyance and retention capacity of the City's wastewater collection system, thereby mitigating the impact of extreme storm events. 4. Reduction in pumping and treating combined wastewater (storm and sanitary) flows.
