Published purpose
This project will offer active travellers the ability to explore and be active in the community by connecting the Confederation Trails to multi-use pathways in the community; a floating dock/boardwalk system that offers access to the Hillsborough River; and an Active Transportation Visitor Centre that will provide storage for and access to active transportation equipment. Abegweit has already purchased kayaks, canoes, snowshoes, skis, bicycles and e-bikes, but does not have a facility to properly store this equipment and more importantly, connect the public to this equipment to encourage active transportation. The Active Transportation Centre will serve as a storage facility for the equipment listed above. The Centre is located in close proximity to the Confederation Trail System and Hillsborough River. Multi-use pathways will tie all active transportation assets together, connecting the Confederation Trails, floating dock/boardwalk system and the Active Transportation Centre. In addition to serving as a storage facility, the Active Transportation Centre will serve as a respite location, with access to publicly accessible washrooms/changerooms for individuals and groups using the trails or any of the equipment listed above. The facility will enhance the community’s connection to active transportation opportunities; while providing a space to educate users on the safe usage of the equipment. The project will also foster connections with surrounding communities via water pathways by use of kayaks and canoes.
