Caldwell First Nation

Published purpose

The project involves raising and reconstructing the southern dyke of the Hillman Marshland for a 1 in 100 year peak water level to avoid flooding of southern Leamington and the Caldwell First Nations. The Caldwell First Nation will work with Essex Region Conservation Authority and the Municipality of Leamington. The project will also add armor stone to the northern face of the Hillman Marshland to lessen the impacts of tidal forces against the dyke. Clay will also be added to strengthen the dyke’s ability to withstand tidal forces. As muskrats have dug holes into the dyke, the muskrats will be relocated and the holes will be filled. By rehabilitating the dyke, Caldwell First Nation lands as well as residential and agricultural lands along the southern Point Peele peninsula will be protected.
