Published purpose
Rideau Heights Community Centre (RHCC) was conceived as a fully-accessible and environmentally responsible facility that provides a much-needed community hub in the highest needs neighbourhood in Kingston, Ontario. This crucial community asset provides City services and community partner programming for the most vulnerable population in our city. The existing building, completed in 2018, was built to meet Canada's Green Building Council's LEED Silver-designed certification, and employs a high-performance envelope, LED lighting, a building automation system and solar thermal for direct hot water heating. In order to achieve greater decarbonization and significant energy savings, our GICB project will retrofit the facility with a net-metered photovoltaic array on the roof and in the adjacent parking lot. Through this project, the Rideau Heights Community Centre will become a greater physical demonstration of Kingston's commitment to a sustainable future.
