This project is part of Global Affairs Canada’s International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Indigenous youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. As part of the Promoting Indigenous Youth Engagement project, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada (JGI-Canada), in partnership with the First Nations’ Forestry Society, sends 34 Indigenous youth to Uganda. Through their work on a range of diverse projects, they focus on issues of environmental sustainability, gender equality and improving Indigenous livelihoods. For example, through JGI’s “Roots and Shoots” program, interns help to promote the inter-connectedness of people, nature and animals, and empower young people to take action. The project is carried out in collaboration with local partners and communities in Bushenyi, Hoima and Masidi Districts in Uganda.
