This project supports the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). CERF is a humanitarian fund established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005, to enable more timely and reliable humanitarian assistance to those affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts. CERF is managed, on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General, by the Emergency Relief Coordinator, and the Head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). As a pooled fund, CERF delivers urgently needed humanitarian assistance at the country-level, both by kick-starting relief efforts immediately in a crisis, and by scaling up and sustaining protracted relief operations to avoid critical gaps when no other funding is available. CERF funding supports time-critical, life-saving activities and provides humanitarian assistance and protection to those in the most vulnerable situations, including women and girls, people with disabilities, the elderly, refugees, and internally-displaced people. Project activities include: (1) supporting life-saving activities (e.g. food, nutrition, health, protection, shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene, transportation, communication and other items of assistance; and (2) enabling more timely and coordinated humanitarian action.
