November 2022 – Since the onset of the rainy season in June 2022, Chad has recorded its heaviest rainfall in the past 30 years, causing unprecedented flooding in the southern half of the country. Over 1 million people have been affected by the damage and devastation and are in urgent need of emergency humanitarian assistance. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. In countries experiencing humanitarian crises, UNICEF fulfills its mandate through humanitarian assistance programming activities outlined under the Humanitarian Action for Children appeal and guided by its Core Commitments for Children. With support from GAC and other international donors, UNICEF provides multisectoral emergency response to flood-affected children and families through the provision of nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health, protection, and emergency non-food items. Project activities include: (1) providing access to WASH services to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases; (2) providing nutrition services including screening and treatment of malnutrition of children under five; (3) providing health services including vaccination against measles for children and access to basic health care for women; (4) providing access to protection services for children; and (5) distributing non-food items including essential household items and cash.
