November 2024 - Lebanon is witnessing a significant increase in humanitarian needs following the largest escalation of fighting since the 2006 Lebanon War. This comes against a backdrop of intersecting governance and economic crises in Lebanon, which has been marked by a steady degradation of social systems and shocks such as COVID-19 and the Beirut Port explosion in 2020. Food security is rapidly deteriorating across the country, with 23% of the population representing 1.26 million people facing acute hunger. Since October 2023, more than 3,500 people have been killed and 1.5 million people displaced. The vast majority of collective shelters are operating well above capacity, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities struggle to meet basic food needs due to displacement and market disruptions. The ongoing destruction of hospitals, ambulances, and attacks on healthcare workers is critically impacting life-saving and essential health services. In response, the UN Flash Appeal seeks US $426 million to provide assistance to one million people between October and December 2024. With GAC’s support, the World Food Program (WFP) aims to provide lifesaving assistance to crisis-affected people in Lebanon. Project activities include: (1) distributing of immediate food assistance; and (2) providing emergency cash assistance.?
