The Agricultural Growth Program II project aims to increase agricultural production and productivity and better link smallholder farmers to markets. The AGP II project also aims to contribute to improved nutritional status by diversifying and improving dietary consumption. AGP II project's main components focus on: (1) agricultural research and dissemination to increase productivity; (2) support to public agricultural services (extension services) to increase their access to more farmers; (3) small scale irrigation for increased production, including of fruits/vegetable with high nutritional values; and (4) agricultural marketing, value chain development and agri-business for improved market access. AGP II is expected to reach 1.6 million farmers (40% women). Activities include: (1) supporting the production of 6,290 quintals of breeder seeds for major crop varieties; releasing 280 new technologies to reach farmers; (2) construction/rehabilitation and equipping of 2,800 farmers training centers established at the village level and 800 animal health clinics; (3) rehabilitation and upgrading of small scale irrigation schemes or establishment of new ones with 55,000 ha for 230,000 farmers provided with irrigated water; (4) support to 3,200 commercially oriented smallholder farmers group to develop and implement their business plans, including through the provision of equipment and inputs, establishment of market centers and development of linkages between value-chain participants.
