This project focuses on the Comprehensive Response Plan for COVID-19, which complements the Girls Retention and Transition Initiative (GRTI), a broader four-year project (2019-2023) aiming to advance gender equality in education in Tanzania. GRTI is implemented by HakiElimu, a Tanzanian local civil society organization focused on education. The GRTI project addresses the many barriers preventing girls from enjoying their right to education, through local and national engagement and collaboration with the government, schools and communities. Project activities include: (1) identifying and mentoring girls at risk of dropping out of school; (2) ensuring that girls can access clean and safe toilets, sanitation facilities and products; (3) raising public awareness and inciting action on issues of girls’ education through multimedia campaigns; and (4) raising government accountability and action through policy dialogue. HakiElimu’s Response Plan for COVID-19 seeks to preserve an educational environment favourable to the implementation of the GRTI activities, to compensate for the prolonged school closure period that puts students at risk of falling behind or dropping out in the future. It also helps in the preparations for a smooth return to the planned activities once schools reopen.
