March 2015 - The humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate as a result of the civil war and intensified violence in the country. The United Nations estimates that 12.2 million people inside Syria, including 5.6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Combined with 3.8 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries, this is the largest number of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With DFATD’s support, Oxfam-Québec is helping to improve access to quality drinking water, safe sanitation facilities and solid waste management services for approximately 40,000 vulnerable crisis-affected people living in Lebanon. Project activities include: (1) providing safe water for drinking and cooking; (2) repairing and upgrading water distribution networks; (3) providing and rehabilitating latrines and hand-washing facilities; (3) providing solid waste management services; (4) distributing cleaning kits and vouchers for hygiene items; (5) delivering educational messages on hygiene promotion; (6) delivering awareness and information sessions on refugee rights and available services; (7) establishing refugee peer support groups and focal points; and (8) providing recreational activities for children on children’s rights. (9) WASH policy, influencing and capacity building; (10) delivery of specialized protection services.
