This contribution to the United Nations Development Program's (UNDP) Trust Fund is part of a multi-donor initiative in support of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). APRM is a unique initiative that was developed by Africans and was embraced by the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). The APRM is a voluntary process through which African countries open their governance institutions and processes to peer review. Country assessments are carried out by a group of peers, which reviews four areas: democracy and political governance, economic governance and management, corporate governance, and socio-economic development. A panel of African Eminent Persons oversees the entire process to ensure its integrity. Heads of State that were signatories of the APRM process make up the African Peer Review Forum, the highest body governing the process. The APRM signatory countries then take steps to apply the best political and economic governance practices.
