The purpose of this project is to assist poor rural communities and households in four union councils of District Abbottabad (North West Frontier Province) affected by the October 2005 earthquake in South Asia. The project aims to support and enable community-led reconstruction activities that lead to sustainable and equitable economic and social development. The project is designed to establish and engender sustainable livelihoods, improve food security and well-being and prepare communities and households for future natural disasters, with a focus on vulnerable groups, such as women and single-parent households. The project's key elements include: enhancing sustainable livelihoods for targeted households and vulnerable groups; undertaking environmentally and economically sustainable community-based natural resource management; ensuring community infrastructure is in place to support sustainable and equitable economic development; improved and equitable food security and well being of households; and enhanced community-led disaster preparedness and humanitarian response.
