Objet publié
February 2014 - Ongoing fighting between government forces and rebel groups in many parts of Sudan continue to displace civilians. According to the United Nations, some 6.1 million people (4.25 million of whom have been internally displaced within Sudan), and an estimated one million people in Sudan’s opposition-held areas require immediate humanitarian assistance. Humanitarian needs in Sudan are driven by: ongoing conflict, insecurity, and displacement of people; poverty and socioeconomic conditions; lack of governance and institutional capacity; and environmental threats, such as floods and droughts. With DFATD's support, this project is helping to address the emergency water, sanitation and hygiene needs of up to 144,000 Sudanese who have been internally displaced or seriously affected by the ongoing conflict. Project activities include: (1) establishing 15 new boreholes and 85 rehabilitated water points; (2) establishing and training 100 hand pump mechanics on maintenance, repair and testing of water points, and creating 15 water management committees; (3) procuring spare parts to fix 100 water points; (4) assisting 1,500 households by providing materials to construct household latrines; and (5) procuring mosquito nets for 24,000 vulnerable households and other non-food items for 1,500 vulnerable households.
