March 2015 – Ongoing conflicts in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, as well as an influx of refugees from South Sudan, have contributed to a significant deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan. Some 6.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, including 3.1 million internally displaced people, 700,000 refugees and asylum seekers, 1.2 million malnourished children under the age of five, and 1.6 million people who are food insecure. Food security and malnutrition continue to be priority sectors for humanitarian assistance, as well as health and sanitation needs. With DFATD’s support, World Vision Canada is providing emergency health water, sanitation and hygiene services to over 170,000 conflict-affected people in South Darfur. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating eight existing boreholes and drilling nine new boreholes, benefitting 4,500 people; (2) training of nine community water committees, totaling 90 people and training 54 hand pump mechanics; (3) constructing 600 emergency household latrines, benefitting 3,600 people; (4) providing hygiene training to 100 volunteers and distributing hygiene kits to 1,000 vulnerable households; and (5) providing seven primary health care clinics with essential medicines to ensure safe deliveries, neonatal and postnatal care.
