This project aims to reduce the threat posed by the proliferation and illicit use of conventional weapons in the Indo Pacific region by supporting states in overcoming barriers to the universalization and effective implementation of the ATT. In doing so, the project contributes to greater regional stability and strengthened global security. Project activities include: (1) facilitating structured dialogue and regional networking by convening interactive events that build confidence, support the exchange of national experiences, and promote informed cross regional and inter agency discussions on issues related to the ATT; (2) developing and sharing evidence based information products that address the concerns of states that have not yet joined the Treaty and encourage their engagement in related policy discussions; and (3) providing tailored technical assistance and capacity building support to national authorities, regional organizations and ATT-related institutions to strengthen their ability to advance treaty universalization and compliance. The project directly benefits governments and national authorities in the Indo Pacific region responsible for arms transfer controls, as well as institutions, regional organizations, civil society organizations and experts working on arms control and security issues. Ultimately, the project benefits people across the Indo Pacific region by helping to reduce illicit arms flows and armed violence, and it also benefits Canada, NATO Allies and Canadians abroad through improved regional stability and lower global proliferation risks.
