This program aims to reduce mortality among children under the age of five in African countries with high rates of malaria. Since the mosquitoes that carry malaria mostly bite at night, sleeping under long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) greatly reduces the chance of contracting this potentially fatal disease. This program builds on CIDA's previous support to the Canadian Red Cross to procure LLINs and deliver them to children under the age of five in multiple African countries. This program also delivers life-saving modern malaria treatment, artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACTs), to children under the age of five in two districts in Kenya. The program builds on previous CIDA-supported Canadian Red Cross malaria programs that delivered malaria prevention interventions to pregnant women and children under five.
