14 October 2011 - Torrential monsoon rains in August and September triggered extensive flooding in Sindh and Balochistan provinces, Pakistan. Based on an initial assessment of the situation, the United Nations estimates that approximately 5.8 million people have been affected by the floods, and about 1.8 million people have been displaced from their homes. The flood-affected population is in immediate need of food assistance, emergency shelter and household items, clean water and sanitation, basic health care, and, support for the prevention and treatment of acute malnutrition among children and pregnant/breastfeeding women. CIDA’s contribution is helping the World Health Organization (WHO) meet the immediate health care needs of flood-affected people through the provision of basic preventive and curative health care; procurement of essential medicines, medical equipment and vaccines to prevent and treat communicable diseases; monitoring of the health status of the flood-affected population; and, ensuring that flood-affected women receive essential hygiene supplies, as well as appropriate support in the event of gender-based violence.
