March 21, 2011 - A popular uprising against the four-decade long rule of Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi began on February 16th, 2011. Conflict between pro- and anti- government forces has resulted in instability. Hundreds of thousands of people, mostly migrant workers, have crossed the borders into neighbouring countries (Egypt and Tunisia). Many third country nationals have become stranded at the border. Affected populations, both inside and outside of Libya, are in need of food, non-food items, water, sanitation, and medical attention. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFCR) has conducted assessments to determine the humanitarian needs of the displaced population, and has issued a request for required humanitarian items for its transit camp in Raj Ajdir, Tunisia. CIDA's support aims to enable the Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS) to ship and restock emergency relief items requested by the IFRC from its Dubai warehouse to Djerba, Tunisia. Expected outputs include the provision of 7,305 mid-thermal blankets.
