December 2012 - Typhoon Bopha (local name "Pablo") made landfall on the eastern coast of Mindanao island in southern Philippines on 5 December as a category five typhoon, the most destructive storm to hit the country this year. Typhoon Bopha brought heavy rains and strong winds, leaving significant damage to homes, livelihoods, and critical public infrastructure as it crossed over the southern Philippines. The eastern provinces of Mindanao were the most affected. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is part of the largest humanitarian network in the world. The Federation is comprised of 187 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and can count on almost 97 million volunteers and staff worldwide. With CIDA support, the IFRC 2012 emergency operations in the Philippines will provide a basic life-saving assistance to an estimated 50,000 people affected by Typhoon Bopha. Project activities focus on providing emergency food assistance, emergency shelter, preventative health services, and essential household items; improving water and sanitation services; and providing targeted livelihoods support to vulnerable typhoon-affected people.
