This project aims to help the Government of Kenya manage the extractives sector transparently and responsibly in order to maximize the social and economic development benefits for people. The project helps to build knowledge and skills in key government institutions, including the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, and civil society and non-governmental organizations. This helps these organizations better understand policy alternatives and more effectively manage the extractives sector for the benefit of communities. Some project activities include: (i) work with the Government of Kenya and key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive Petroleum Master Plan including implementation plans; (ii) assess the government’s capacity to work with the private sector on contracting and licensing agreements in the petroleum sector and develop and implement a training plan to address identified gaps and weaknesses; (iii) assess current capacity and gaps in capacity of key government institutions to engage communities and civil society organizations and develop and pilot community consultation and engagement strategies with targeted community service organizations and local communities in areas slated for oil and gas sector development.
