Objet publié
March 2015 – Chad faces simultaneous acute emergencies: malnutrition, recurrent disease epidemics and outbreaks, cyclical floods, drought and displacement affect 3.2 million people. With three major humanitarian crises at its borders, notably Central African Republic (CAR), Nigeria and South Sudan, Chad will continue to host refugees in 2015. CAR returnees and refugees are living in dire conditions in transit sites and temporary camps in the south, all of whom need access to protection, nutrition, health and water, sanitation and hygiene, and education. Food security has worsened due to population displacement and below-average seasonal rainfall, mainly affecting the Sahel strip. With DFATD’s support, CARE Canada is providing emergency assistance to over 36,000 Central African refugees, Chadian returnees and host community households to improve their living conditions and livelihoods. Activities include: (1) provision of cash-for-work transfers to construct 660 shelters; (2) provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities; (3) provision of agricultural tools; and (4) implementation of safeguards against sexual violence to protect women and girls.
